How Depression Counseling Helps

Sadness is a normal fluctuation in emotion in response to loss, betrayal, or grief. Depression, however, is a prolonged, complex, and serious mood disorder causing severe symptoms that impact how a person thinks, feels, and copes with everyday life. In some cases, a negative self-concept and worldview can lead to thoughts of suicide or self-harm.

Depression lies on a spectrum from mild to severe. Mild depression can be the mental health equivalent to a low-grade fever accompanied by low motivation and feeling “blah”. Whereas moderate to high levels of depression can make it difficult to perform everyday tasks, connect with those you love, and get out of bed in the morning. It is almost always accompanied by high levels of guilt, hopelessness, and worthlessness.

Depression

The good news is we know what causes depression. When we know the cause we can know how to correct it. Depression is NOT a character defect, a sign of weakness, or a lack of faith. We do know that unhelpful thought patterns and inaccurate underlying assumptions and beliefs trigger depressive feelings of despair and inadequacy.

Fortunately, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps to uncover dysfunctional thought patterns and core beliefs and replaces them with more adaptive and beneficial ways of thinking. In addition, you will be taught coping strategies to change unhelpful thought patterns so that you no longer need therapy. You will be empowered with an arsenal of tools and strategies you can use for the rest of your life. You will be an expert at recognizing any old, maladaptive thought patterns and nip them in the bud before they take root.

*In instances where I believe medication may be needed as a supplement to our work together, I know several Christian and secular psychiatrists or APNs whom I can refer you to for medication management.
