I’m Hilary Akman, a licensed professional counselor and licensed mental health counselor. I offer online counseling sessions for individuals throughout the states of Florida and New Jersey, and I also provide in-person therapy at my office in Davie, FL. In counseling sessions, I utilize a cognitive behavioral approach to psychotherapy with an emphasis on mindfulness practices. Cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT is a way of understanding how the beliefs we hold about ourselves and the world are internalized as thoughts and feelings then projected in our actions and behaviors.

Most of this process is unconscious, so to make changes to negative patterns of thought, emotion, and actions, we must reveal these unconscious processes. Developing self-awareness and understanding and making a plan for change can help individuals to adjust their behavior and reduce the symptoms of anxiety disorders, including social anxiety, panic disorder, phobias, and general anxiety.

I have been a psychotherapist since 1999 and a found the Lord as a teenager. Recognizing that pain and suffering are part of the human condition, I seek to utilize spiritual healing as the foundation for emotional, mental, and psychological integration. I help people break free from old school legalism that cripples their growth in Christ while embracing all that God desires them to be. My clinical focus is on anxiety, with a specialty in social anxiety and panic disorder as well depression and ADHD. I work with adolescents, parents, and adults.

Professional Experience

My clinical experience encompasses working with children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples using individual, group, and family therapy. Prior to entering into private practice in 2004, I worked as the Senior Clinician in the Child and Adolescent office and the Adult outpatient office of a community mental health agency. In this role, I developed and led anger management groups as well as drug and alcohol intensive outpatient groups for adolescents. I developed and conducted a seminar for other therapists seeking certification for compulsive gambling. Today, I work in private practice where I partner with individuals who are struggling with anxiety disorders. Proud to be a member of the National Association of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

Online Counseling

Is your social anxiety so severe that you can’t get yourself to the grocery store let alone a counseling appointment?  Do you want to engage in therapy, but you don’t have the time in your schedule to make trips to my office? Do you travel frequently for work, but you want to invest in therapy now? I offer online counseling that provides the access to treatment you need to decrease or even eliminate your debilitating symptoms of anxiety disorder.

Experience the benefits of effective counseling from a knowledgeable therapist who specializes in the kind of anxiety you have. Online sessions are conducted using a HIPAA compliant platform (not zoom) that can be held in the comfort and privacy of your home or office, so you can rest assured your privacy and security are always a top priority for me.

Additionally, I have completed advanced training and received certification as a telemental health provider, so I know the risks and can help you create a safe and private therapy environment from where you are.

In-Person Therapy Sessions

In addition, to online sessions for Florida and New Jersey residents, I offer in person office visits in Davie, FL. Just like online therapy sessions, I am happy to work with individuals who are struggling with anxiety in the office. For some, getting outside of their comfort zone can be an important part of the therapy process. For others, sitting together in a shared space feels more natural and inviting than communicating over video chat. Whatever the reason you prefer to meet in person, this option is available.
